Welcome to the Erie Canal Museum

Syracuse Heritage Area at the ECM

Heritage Area Exhibits Room
The Erie Canal ignited many important changes in New York State. Syracuse grew from a sleepy village in the 1820's to a growing city by the 1850's. The salt industry in Syracuse and Liverpool, as well as other industries in the area prospered and that growth is depicted.

Heritage Area Theater
Fifty seat theater features a multimedia orientation slide show on the history of Syracuse and the Erie Canal. Our traditional heritage center for culture and entertainment, just a short drive from the area's interstates, is enjoying a tremendous renaissance. The wealth of cultural treasures in our museums, theaters, architecture, and public parks will surprise you. An exciting new array of restaurants, special events and high-tech attractions will keep you coming back.

Make the Syracuse Heritage Area Visitor Center at the Erie Canal Museum the first stop. Relive our rich local history through our hands-on exhibits, maps, brochures, and walking tour ideas.
